The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandates the use of windsocks in airports that have accepted Federal grant assistance through advisory circulars. The current advisory circular covering windsocks or windcones is AC 150/5345-27D. It provides specifications and standards for the manufacture and installation of a windsock and frame. Basically, it provides information for compliance with Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 139.

Having an oilfield background, I sit and think of all the men and women that are working around H2S safely on a daily basis. They know that they have to be aware of wind direction any time they open up a closed system. Whether their job is to gauge a tank, check a mud pit, open a pig launcher, or check an orifice, they realize their life is at jeopardy. Having a windsock, a visual safety tool, to aide them in determining wind direction is essential. Several states, where H2S is prevalent, have mandated the use of windsocks.
